Update: Access to Coldwater Springs
Area
Dear Preserve Camp Coldwater
Coalition members;
On October 20th, 2005, Jan Dalsin, Jeanne Hollingsworth,
Michael Scott and Marcia Brusoe met with Robert Hansen of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service.
In response to concerns regarding access to Coldwater
Springs expressed by members of Preserve Camp Coldwater Coalition, Mdewakanton
Dakota Community, Friends of Coldwater and others, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service (FWS) drew up plans that address their (FWS) safety and liability
concerns. They have informed us that once key safety measures have
been implemented, hours of access to Coldwater Springs will return to 9:00
AM to 3:00 PM, Monday through Friday, and permits will no longer be required.
The main change will be the
addition of fences around the buildings in the former Bureau of Mines
property. These buildings and surrounding property will remain off
limits.
See map below- the asphalt drive (in
yellow) to Coldwater Springs (in blue) will remain open.
Fences about 48 inches high will be
surrounding areas off limits with chained gates (in pink)
